No Pain, No Game?

After I read Sport and the Body, a chapter in the book, I had a new outlook on women in sport. Before reading this chapter I simply believed that women should have the same opportunity that a man have in sport and that neither men nor women should be limited. I thought that the only outcome of participating in sports could be positive. This chapter opened up my eyes to the negative outcomes of sports and I now see the danger of the traditional way people look at sports. People look at professional athletes as if they are machines and expect them to play through pain. Athletes must play at 100% even though one function of the body may fail. This leads to later injury and if an athlete is injured to a certain degree they, in most cases, they fade away. Fans do not care so much about fallen athletes. This reading made me think if women would like to adopt the traditional way men play sports or create a new one that is less brutal. I think sports as a whole should tone it down to be mindful of the players.
